ITAP - Photography and Typography

How Does Text Effect An Image?

Without text images would be viewed in a different context and could mean multiple things, a picture can be portrayed and speak a 1000 words depending what it is and how its shown, in this case I will be looking at motervational posters on how the images shown are completely twisted through context and type.

Above is an amusing motervational poster from Bungie's Halo series, it's applying that there can be friendship through online slayer matches where 2 opposing teams red and blue battle to who gets the highest kills, its just ironic how the image shows defiance against Bungie and there ways. Without the text the image would confuse the viewer, they might just guess that it's and advertisement for the game, text is just as important as an image, mixing the 2 can have many outcomes and mean something completely different.

How Does No Text Effect Emotion?

Like the saying goes, A picture can speak a 1000 words, depending on what the image is trying to tell you, or to figure it out for yourself, how do you figure out a photo without the knowledge?

ITAP – Development of Creative Thought & Structure in Illustration & Graphic Art

ITAP – Development of Creative Thought & Structure in Illustration & Graphic Art

Developing Ideational Fluency

How to be inspired, it is vital that a creative person is to avoid hitting that annoying brick wall, it happens to us all but is pointless if you cannot find a source or outlet for it.

Personally I gain inspiration mainly when I'm about to drift off to sleep annoying as it is getting out of bed to write the idea down it certainly benefits me as I don't wake up and forget. I also write things down and leave notes, possibly to many notes as my room is full of post its, when I'm  on the bus I do some sketches but stop halfway through due to people starring at me probably due to the fact I'm sketching them in some weird, wonderful way. One of my fun ways to play around with is by writing 3 random words on paper then to illustrate them in some form. I mainly collect flyers advertising pubs and metal clubs as the illustrations are always catchy.

Managing a Creative Environment

Depending where you work it can effect your outcomes, it can be easily drawn into the abyss when the tv is on or when people are talking next to you, theres just no way to channel your artistic thinking. The workshop, bedroom, garage, basement should be your room of eternal thinking where ideas poor out of a glass and draw themselves.
Thats where I'm guilty, my room is I hope to say inspirational but lacks style, I need to invest in a desk and other utilities, I work on the floor, more open spread. Incense sticks are like this essence of nostalgia, brings back some semi concious feeling which dates back to a childhood memory perhaps and just in tradition I light one when I work.

ITAP – Production & Outcomes, Influences & Reactions

Interpretation

The define line between two different artist’s interpretations of the same piece of work allows for an interesting insight into their working process. My first example is of the 1986 film The Hitcher directed by Robert Harmon, a horror/thriller but has this chilled dark euphoria about it and messes with your head once watched and leaves you thinking.  A young man who escaped the clutches of a murderous hitch-hiker is subsequently stalked and framed for the hitchers crimes, starring Rutger Hauer as the hitcher.

Compared to the remake in 2007 directed by Dave Mayers the plot is pretty much the same but modernized to keep the film fresh and up to date unlike the Texas chainsaw massacre where the remake kept that 70's authenticity. This time the woman is the heroin and the hitcher is played by Sean Bean.

Character Design

The 2 key elements in character design for video games is personality and appearance to justify if a villain or hero. Depending on the age group of course you need to know the target audience. Here is an image of the main character Ezio from the Assassins Creed series, he is an assassin a brotherhood who seeks revenge of the murder of his family but discovers a bigger conspiracy. His appearance is hooded, obscured and almost monk like to fit in large crowds, the artist has made the character more stealth by giving Ezio hidden compartments to hide his blades and gun. The biggest thing about Ezio and the previous assassin Altier from Assassins Creed is the red and white colour choice of clothing to make the character stand out from the crowd as they wear all earthy dense clothing and for the player to easy recognize the main character from the crowd.

Utilizing ones creative Brain

Utilizing ones creative Brain

There are many ways to exercise the brain, Listening to heavy metal always helps me, depending on the song I picture an image that bests fits that song depending on the lyrics and guitar riffs, if I'm initially stuck for an idea I write down 3 random words that come to mind, then create an image using the related words, then a theme comes to mind. As where as in school, made to draw a shell is not thinking for yourself and doesn't allow you to have an initiative, clearly I just have a personal vendetta against my art teacher.............
Most of my ideas come to mind when I'm drifting off to sleep then to force myself to wake up and write down the idea in-case I forget or sometimes when I actually remember a dream. Speaking of dreams Sigmund Freud's theory of The unconscious mind (referring) to dreams "The royal road to the unconscious". This meant that dreams illustrate the logic of the unconscious mind and The preconscious a layer between conscious and unconscious thought; its contents can be accessed with a little effort.

ITAP - RVJ

ITAP - RVJ

The RVJ (visual reflective diary is a key componant to an illustrator's creative journey, it should catalogue visual ideas from rough sketches to a dream you had the night before on a new idea.
It basically reflects who you are, your personality and art style, a pinnacle life sorce, we are told to take it everywhere we go. Some find this a burden to carry around and worry about annotation but it pays off we should know we've all been in that dilemma probably throughout college. Not only does it help with idea developing but increases your drawing skills and you kind of become proud of yourself when reaching the end of pages in a sketchbook.
